RIP Jack LaLanne

By Albert on January 23, 2011 11:50 PM

Jack LaLanne has passed away at 96 years young. He was a fitness guru and what I knew of him really impressed me.

I learned about him from the film “Bigger, Faster, Stronger”, which is quite good by the way. In it, he is himself, proselytizing the benefits of staying fit.

I’d like to live to be 96 or older! How about you? I’ve gotta get back on my exercise bike.

Strep Throat?

By Albert on August 6, 2010 11:11 PM

Anatomie_bouche.jpg My daughter has been sick the past week or so and there are little signs that its letting up. Last weekend my throat started getting sore, but then it seemed to get better.

Then this week I've started to get a sore throat again, and I've become very congested. Then my daughter's mother informs me that a few of the children at my daughter's daycare center have had strep throat, but that she didn't think our daughter has it.

Ugh! I've had strep throat before and it is a really unpleasant condition. I'm trying to make due with over the counter cold medicine, throat lozenges (the generic / CVS brand of Dayquil), and lots and lots of tissues.

I did a little research on the topic and found a helpful page from Google stating that the human body will usually do away with strep throat on its own, and that antibiotics are sometimes prescribed to avoid other complications, like rheumatic fever - no thanks!

They also clarify that strep throat is caused by "Group A Streptococcus bacteria".

Swimming with Ear Plugs

By Albert on July 14, 2010 7:24 AM

I've been swimming a lot lately in an effort to get in shape. I usually do the back stroke. Its my favorite style, and I can readily adjust the intensity of my workout.

Yesterday I tried swimming with ear plugs for the first time. It was awesome! I found it much more relaxing because I was able to put my head back and not worry about getting water in my ears.

The pool I swim in has lanes for lap swimming, which definitely helps. Since I do the back stroke, I have bumped my head into the wall not realizing how close I was. I tried to think of a way that I could tell how close I was to the edge and came up with an idea to put a red marker on the lane ropes. As I was inspecting the lane ropes, I realized their pattern changes near the wall, so that's what I'm using as a gauge to measure how close I am. Nice!

Pinched Nerve Remedy

By Albert on July 12, 2010 10:44 AM

A friend of mine is suffering from a painful pinched nerve. To try and help, I've started to research the condition. Here's a couple of links I found interesting so far:

Based on what I've read so far, treatments for pinched (compressed) nerve pain include:

  • Laying low and not engaging in any strenuous activities
  • Traction is where weights and pulleys are used to pull joints in an effort to reduce pressure
  • Medication is sometimes prescribed for temporary pain relief
  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractor therapy
  • Acupuncture

There are pros and cons of each of those, and from what I gathered, the different therapies work with varied efficacy to different patients. There is no "silver bullet" for permanent relief from chronic pain.
