Does Old Age Cause Cancer?

Of course young people get cancer too, but I've heard many smart people say that everyone would get cancer if they lived long enough.

Why does it happen? How do our cells even know how old they are? Replicating cells generate new cells all the time, why can't we perfect a balanced cycle which would continue to replenish healthy cells forever?

If I understand correctly, cancer is sort of like an unhealthy cycle that replicating cells get stuck in. They regenerate out-of-control. Will this always happen if the cells regenerate long enough?
