President Obama has declared H1N1, aka swine flu, a "national emergency". I'm going to get a seasonal flu shot, and am leaning towards getting my 19 month old daughter a swine flu shot, but I'm somewhat disappointed that our president has declared it a national emergency.
Why? Mainly because so many people are injured and killed every year due to automobile accidents, but very little is being done about it. To be more specific, approximately 40,000 people die in the United States due to car accidents each year. Only 1,000 people have died from swine flu.
In my opinion, automobile safety has been a national emergency for decades, and while there is a significant danger, the media has been busy hyping up swine flu to capture more attention. Is the government hyping it up to garner support for its public health insurance plans? Its possible, but who knows how probable it is?
